Substitute Teaching
Thank you for your interest in the Macon County School system. The Macon County School system welcomes applications from individuals who are interested in becoming substitute teachers. Please follow the procedures below to file an application for substitute teaching:
-
As a new applicant for substitute teaching in the Macon County School System, it is required that you build a set of skills for handling classroom management issues and effectively teaching in the classroom. New applicants must complete an online training course and online assessment with a composite score of 85% or higher. If you hold a current teaching license in the state of North Carolina; or hold a current teaching license from a state that has reciprocity with the state of North Carolina; or have successfully completed the "Effective Teacher Training" course; or if you will complete your student internship in the Macon County School system, you are exempt from the online training course requirement. The cost of the course is $39.95 per person and includes the assessment and the "SubDiploma". Everything is online; nothing will be mailed to you, unless you wish to purchase a paperback copy of the handbook for an additional $19.95. Allow 8-12 hours to study and complete the 5-part assessment (total of 65 multiple-choice questions). You have four attempts in each of the five areas to reach your best score. Take your time reviewing a section before returning to the assessment for another attempt.
-
-
After you have downloaded and completed these forms and the online training course with a composite score of 85% or higher, the "Application for Substitute Teacher," "Authorization and Release Form," and "SubDiploma" should be submitted to a principal at any Macon County School for approval. The principal will sign and approve the application and forward it, along with the other required documents to the personnel department. The personnel department will complete your background check and then place your applicaiton on the board agenda for approval at the next monthly Board of Education meeting.
-
Once approved by the Board of Education, you will be sent a letter confirming your approval. Upon receipt of your letter, you will need to contact the personnel department to schedule an appointment to complete the remainder of your paperwork, which usually takes less than 30 minutes to complete.
-
Upon completion of all required paperwork, you will be issued a Macon County Schools name badge for identification and your name will be placed on the list of available substitutes.
