My name is Jacquelyn Brown and this is my 16th year of teaching at East Franklin Elementary School. I graduated from UNCC in 1975 with a BA in Psychology. Then my plans to continue were happily interrupted by 4 wonderful children. When my youngest was in middle school I went to Western Carolina University and graduated with a BA in Elementary Education in 1996.
I love teaching and feel that it was God’s calling for my life. I believe that learning is an exciting lifelong adventure. This adventure is shaped by the identity that children assume in their world. I encourage my students to see themselves as mathematicians, scientists, authors, etc. They don't just do math - they are mathematicians. They don't just do phonics - they become word detectives. Learning in the room is active, both mentally and physically with inquiry, experiments, publications, and hands-on experiences. Personal responsibility is fostered in a positive and nurturing classroom community. It is my goal to do all that I can to empower my students to accept ownership for their learning and to encourage them to be lifelong learners and responsible citizens.
