 Introduction

Welcome to Mr. C's world of Biology!

This site is intended to help communicate with my students and their parents many important due dates and information for all involved in order to stay on top of what is going on, to be successful in this class.  Our goal at Franklin High School is for student success by providing students with pathways to achieve success.  This site is one of those pathways.

My room number is M-104  I am always available Thursday after school in my room for any student for help.

Parents should expect a progress report to come home with their student twice per every nine weeks, and a total of four times per semester.  Since we are on a nine week schedule, parents should expect two report cards to come home per semester.  Parents are expected to sign and return all progress reports the next day for a student grade of 100% as an assignment grade.

Students must score a minimum of 81% on the State EOC Biology Final Exam in order to avoid being requested to re-take this exam.  If you do re-take it, we use the highest grade for final averaging.

Basic Biology course rubric is:   1st nine weeks' report card grade = 37.5%

2nd nine weeks' report card grade = 37.5%

Final Biology Exam = State EOC Biology Test   = 25% (Must get min. of 81% here!)

Final Biology Course Grade = 100%

Regular Biology students will be required to do an insect collection. (Worth 3 Test Grades, and a detailed rubric with specific details is handed out to every student on the second day of school.)

Honors Biology students will do:  1.  An insect collection (Worth 3 Test Grades, detailed rubric given out)

                                                      2.  A major research paper (Worth 3 Test Grades, detailed rubric given out to each student on the second day of school with due dates and APA writing style guidelines)

                                                      3.  A bulletin board project (with a partner)(One Test Grade)

                                                      4.  A power point presentation (with a partner)(One Test Grade)

Extra credit opportunities are provided by Mr. C throughout the course on many occasions.

Students are expected to keep their ears open for extra credit during class time.

Students are expected to keep up with any missed work to avoid getting zeroes, and to get their work handed in to me on time.  Students are allowed one week in order to make up missed tests, quizzes, and labs, or they receive a permanent zero.  Students are allowed two days for every day absent in order to turn in missed assignments, or they receive a permanent zero.  This is a basic expectation, and can be altered by teacher's discretion.

Students are expected to do homework for about 30 minutes average every night.  Honors students more.

Basic rubric per every nine weeks' report card:

    Assignment Average = 33%

    Quiz Average = 33%

    Test Average = 34%

I ask all parents to help your child succeed by encouraging them to study in a quiet environment, and to communicate with them the importance of learning and hard work.

The best way to communicate with me is by my e-mail address john.cantrell@macon.k12.nc.us

I trust you enjoy your Biology journey this 90 days with me!  Sincerely,  John K. Cantrell
