ABOUT MACON EARLY COLLEGE

Macon Early College opened its doors in August, 2006. Originally housed in the Old Cartoogechaye School, with 50 students, the school moved to the new Southwestern Community College campus in July 2007.  In March 2009, we moved into our beautiful new building which houses offices and classrooms for the high school component.

The first graduates of MEC received their diplomas on June 6, 2010.  Eighteen students received their high school diploma and of those twelve also received their Associate of Arts degree from Southwestern Community College.

The staff of MEC consists of a principal, an administrative assistant, a guidance counselor, a technology facilitator, 5 teachers, and 4 tutors.  The student population for the 2011-2012 school year is 150.

Macon Early College is a public high school which is fully integrated into the Southwestern Community College system. This partnership is an ongoing collaborative team of college and high school personnel, shared resources and calendars which has aided in the development of a nurturing environment aimed at college-readiness, the world of work and beyond.

MISSION STATEMENT

Macon Early College is committed to creating an accelerated, rigorous, and supportive learning environment for students, so they can be active participants in their education and community, both local and global.

MACON EARLY COLLEGE VISION

The faculty and staff of Macon Early college envision a dynamic and supportive learning environment that provides:

  • a small school environment
  • authentic experiences to build bridges between academics and the community
  • each student with the technology to participate in a global community
  • the opportunity to earn an AA degree and a High School diploma
  • career exploration and place-based learning
  • a safe learning environment
  • tutors to provide academic enrichment
  • postiive relationships with faculty, staff, and peers
  • vertically integrated teams from middle school through community college

CURRICULUM

The curriculum at MEC, while it follows the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS), is both RIGOROUS AND RELEVANT for all students.  High school classes are honors level.  Students are required to take the ACCUPLACER COLLEGE PLACEMENT TEST, which places them indivdually in the most rigorous college curriculum in which they will be successful. College courses act in a dual role, meeting the high school graduation requirements and the general education requirements for Southwestern Community College thus making for a seamless transition in the 9-13 experience.  Career oriented classes and internships help students build their own bridges between school and the community.
