Makin’ Bots – Macon County FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) Team receives NASA and Duke grants!

The Makin’ Bots FRC Team wants to thank NASA for the award of $6000.00 and Duke Energy for the award of $2000.00 to support our “Rookie” FRC team.  The team will be traveling to GA Tech in January to receive their build kit and begin the 6-week challenge to build a robot!  The grant will provide funding to pay for the kit and for the registration fees for two tournaments in March.  The team will need to raise funds to provide t-shirts, travel funds (hotel, meals, driver) and additional materials.  If you would like to support FRC robotics, please contact Jennifer Love.

FRC (FIRST Robotics Team) has first meeting at TekTone

The team has assembled and we are ready to get to work!  We appreciate our hosts and mentors- TekTone!  Students took a tour of the new facilities and saw how mechanical and electrical engineering, marketing and computer programming are all represented through their business.  These are all of the roles our team members will fill this season as we build a 150 lb. robot starting in Jan!

Macon County goes 3D!

Thanks to the Golden Leaf Foundation grant, which is currently supporting STEM in Macon County, we were able to purchase ten 3D printers for our schools.  The printer we chose is the Lulzbot Mini which is the same printer the WCU Engineering Department is using with their students.

On Oct. 27th, 20 teachers and 10 students from Mountain View, Franklin High, Macon Middle, Union Academy and academic support staff participated in a professional development on 3D printing.  The Professional development was provided by The Science House through NC State University.  By the end of the day, we were all printing and excited about the applications in the classroom!

Here are some photos from the day!  If you would like to support 3D printing in the classroom, please contact Jennifer Love at
